Special SUGA Member Meeting, Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at noon
Your attendance is requested at a special SUGA member meeting following the in-person classes on Wednesday, October 27th. The short meeting will be for the approval of our new slate, of three directors,
for the upcoming 3-year term beginning on January 1, 2022 for our SUGA Board of Directors. This slate was selected at SUGA's Board meeting held Wednesday, October 13, 2021.
Here is the slate of new officers:
MADELINE GRIFFIN
Madeline Griffin was the first female Assistant District Attorney as well as the first woman Juvenile Court Judge in DeKalb County. For a number of years she taught a course on the Juvenile Justice System at Georgia State University and offered a course on this topic for SUGA in 2020. Last year she presented a course on “Major Ridge” and the 18th/19th century Cherokee community in North Georgia. She continues her interest in Native American history with this 2022 course.
NORMAN SLAWSKY
Norman is a SUGA member and has presented classes on law, Atlanta authors, and climate change. He was a labor lawyer for 35 years. He has served as chair of the State Bar of Georgia and the Atlanta Bar Association Labor & Employment Law Sections, and the chair of GreenLaw, a nonprofit environmental law firm, and vice-chair of the Georgia Sierra Club. He is a treekeeper with Trees Atlanta. Norman has a BA in Economics from SUNY Binghamton, an MA in Mathematics from CUNY, and a JD from the University of Georgia. Prior to attending law school, he was a high school math teacher.
MARY JONES
Mary grew up in Maryland and Pennsylvania but moved to Atlanta in the 1970s to attend Emory University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. During nearly 25 years in clinical and administrative hospital positions, she also served in professional nursing organizations, ultimately becoming President of a national specialty nursing board. She also earned a Master in Health Services Administration. She then became Practice Manager for a private orthopaedic practice while completing a second masters degree as a Nurse Practitioner. She retired from full time work in 2015 but continues clinical practice with various native tribal organizations in rural Alaska where she works as the sole medical provider in remote communities. Her hobbies include reading, volunteering at Fernbank Museum, photography, and playing early recorder music with the Rosewood Consort. Mary joined SUGA in 2017 and traveled with fellow members on the trip to Australia and New Zealand in 2019. Most recently, she began flying with the Civil Air Patrol as an Airborne Photographer. Many SUGA members have met Sara, her elderly cat, via the Zoom classes.
