LEONARD BERNSTEIN: LECTURES ON OMNIBUS Anne MacDougal, Member, SUGA
During the 1950’s, the young Leonard Bernstein gave a series of lectures on Omnibus, a 90-minute television program that aired on Sunday afternoons on network television. Omnibus was hosted by Alistair Cooke. It included an array of cultural, scientific, and eclectic general interest topics within the 90-minute live broadcast. From 1954 to 1958, Bernstein, newly the conductor of the New York Philharmonic, gave various lectures that ranged from 33 to 76 minutes in length. These lectures were captured on a DVD, and this class will present a selection of them. They include:
Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony
Musical Comedy
The Art of Conducting
What Makes Opera Grand?
Introduction to Modern Music
The Music of J. S. Bach
Since our class is an hour, some of the sections that are longer than one hour will be split over more than one class session. A more detailed schedule will be sent out when closer to the summer quarter.

AGING WELL: LET’S COME UP WITH YOUR PLAN Fran Clowse, Master Certified Health Coach
This course is about inspiring you to grow and move into your healthiest second half of life. Wellness has many aspects -- from how we move, what we eat, how we feel, who we are with, what we believe (about life, others and even ourselves). This will be a safe place to explore how you want to live in all aspects of life. Wellness is a continuum and wherever you are on the continuum, moving forward is progress. We are saturated with information, but have you ever stopped to think about what it is you really envision for living your best life? We have spent the first half of life building and serving family, work and community; what’s next? This course will create a space for finding your vision for the next phase and ways to begin implementing it. It is an interactive class of thought-provoking discussion and supportive inquiry.

THE ORIGINS OF ROCK AND ROLL: THE MIDDLE SIXTIES Tom Dell, Musician
We look at and listen to the music just preceding the British Invasion and continue to listen as the Brits arrive on our shores. Jan and Dean, The Surfaris, Dick Dale, Ray Charles, Booker T. Jones, Leslie Gore, Bobby Blue Bland, Jackie Wilson and so many more of the early sixties singers we enjoyed. Then into the Invasion years with a look at acts on both sides of the pond. The Dave Clark Five, The Drifters, The Tremeloes, The Shangri-las, even Lorne Greene. This course is a nice overview of the middle-Sixties without getting overwhelmed with the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. As always, through a combination of videos and lecture, we will cover one of the most exciting times in music history.
