POTPOURRI
Ann Levine, Coordinator, Curriculum Chair, SUGA

July 16 and July 23: GENERATIONAL GENEROSITY – A THOUGHT EXPERIMENT
Presenter, Bill Witherspoon, Member, SUGA
What would it be like to have the spirits of your ancestors and of future generations at your side as you make giving decisions? Whether you are able to give away a few hundred dollars per year or more, it can be worthwhile to think of kindnesses your ancestors would want repaid, and investments those yet unborn will wish we had made. We will ponder these questions and share resources for learning about ancestors, rating charities, and making limited funds go farthest.
July 30:  YES, THERE ARE STILL WORLD EXPOS– OSAKA, 2025
Presenter, Allan Hing, Professor of Design
A look at the Osaka World Expo that closed last October.  One-hundred and fifty-eight countries addressed the Fair’s theme – “Designing Future Society for our Lives” in pavilion designs and interior exhibits.  There will be a review of this Expo as well as an analysis of past Expos as they relate to the Osaka Expo – this is my 8th Expo!
August 6: FROM DAY 5 TO 19 YEARS: OUR PKU JOURNEY
Presenter, Kristen Vanags, Proud mom of a 19-year-old with PKU
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare, inherited metabolic disorder that affects the body’s ability to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine. Without treatment, PKU can cause irreversible brain damage, anxiety, depression, and impaired functioning. Fortunately, universal newborn screening allows for early diagnosis and treatment, giving PKU individuals the opportunity for healthy outcomes. When my son was diagnosed at five days old, our family began an unexpected journey—but one that has been filled with resilience, learning, and community. I’ll share our experience navigating PKU and the exciting new treatments and research giving us hope for the future.
August 13:   WHY PUBLIC FUNDING FOR SCIENCE MATTERS
Presenter, Judith Fridovich-Keil, PhD. Professor, Department of Human Genetics
Emory University School of Medicine
At this session, we will learn how public funding enables advances in science and engineering, and how this tiny sliver of the federal budget helps to improve our lives, our health, and our children’s future.
August 20: HUMAN GENETICS 101
Presenter, Judith Fridovich-Keil (see above)
At this session, we will learn some of the basics of contemporary human genetics and how the tools of genetics are being applied to transform medicine, anthropology, forensics, and more.

HOBBIES II
Rosemary Woolfitt, Coordinator, Member, SUGA
Most people seem to have some sort of leisure activity or activities that they enjoy in their spare time. For some people a leisure activity becomes a completely engrossing hobby, taking up many hours a week or month. Sometimes a hobby is remarkable and interesting for being uncommon. Sometimes people get involved in an activity for reasons other than interest but they become an expert despite themselves. In this course we will have presentations live from America and Europe from people with various engaging and unusual hobbies.

INSIDE SUGA: INTERVIEWS
Judy Plecko and Roy Sobelson, Interviewers, Members of SUGA

This course was first offered in Spring, 2023 and again in Winter, 2025.  We have only scratched the surface of learning about our fellow SUGA friends, so we will continue this summer with our member interviews. Senior University is a cross-section of people from different occupations and areas of the country and the world. Did you ever wonder about some of your fellow members? This is your chance to learn more about them in a structured way.  Members will be interviewed with insights gained about how they came to SUGA and what they like most about it.  If you ever watched “Inside the Actors Studio” you will especially enjoy this class.
